A Juxtaposition Of Gloria Skurzynski Nethergrave And Ray Bradbury’s A Sound Of Thunder

Of both the selections, “A Sound Of Thunder”, Ray Bradbury, or “Nethergrave”, Gloria Skurzynski chooses “A Sound Of Thunder”. This is because it features time travel, a time machine, as well as multiple time points.

“A Sound Of Thunder” is science fiction in its writing style. The story begins with an actual time-travel business. A type of travel agent, they take their customers 50 million years back in time to hunt down and kill a dinosaur. Clear instructions are given to paying customers regarding their behavior. They are asked to follow a specific area. Eckels appears to be unable to respect the instructions. When chaos occurs, he panics and runs for cover. This act of rebellion changed the course of history. This story demonstrates how time does not allow you to see yourself. Nethergrave was a socially marginalized boy who returned home from an awful day at soccer and school. He rushes online to meet his friends and can’t wait for them to call him. He knows that his jokes are not very good so he is left feeling a little guilty when everyone has to log off. He is forced to follow the instructions of someone he does not know. It appears to be a fascinating game, but then he realizes that this is not an online game. These parts of science fiction are filled with extraordinary events that would never occur in real life. The author of “A Sound Of Thunder” uses a third-person perspective. Third-person perspective allows us to understand why the scientist is mad at the man. We would not be able to see what the guide said, if it were first-person. The author used first-person viewpoint in “Nethergrave.” The boy’s description of his environment is so accurate that we don’t have to guess what other characters feel. Based on the actions and words of Jeremy, we can see how other characters feel.

“A Sound of Thunder” shows that even a small thing can make a big difference in your life. Eckles touched the butterfly, and everything changed. Eckles was able to experience a whole new way of living. “Nethergrave” shows that some people use the games and activities to escape a difficult life. Jeremy felt abandoned after his divorce from his parents. His mother worked late and his father left him. Finally, his friends made it clear that they didn’t want him to leave the computer. He used the computer for distraction and to create a new, better life. He chose to remain in the virtual world that could bring him glory.

The reader can feel more involved in “A Sound Of Thunder”, which allows them to be more involved in the story’s events. The descriptions of their machines, their lives in that period, and their choices regarding their vacation and money make it feel as if the reader is actually part of the story. Because it so clearly explains Jeremy’s emotions and reactions to the events, the reader doesn’t feel like they are part of “Nethergrave”.
