Student Travel Company Calls In Receivers

The bankruptcy of a travel company catering to students has created uncertainty for approximately 5,000 student travelers, while also resulting in the loss of 330 jobs. The company, Usit Campus, specialized in the under-26 market and faced significant challenges due to decreased air travel following the tragic events of September 11. A corporate receiver, Begbies Traynor, was appointed on Tuesday to handle the situation, and according to Vivian Bairstow of the accounting firm, approximately 1,500 individuals were already traveling with Usit Campus, while an additional 500 had already paid for their tickets and another 500 had placed deposits on flights. The remaining 2,500 people were waiting for travel arrangements. Bairstow advised anyone concerned about their Usit Campus tickets to contact Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The CAA ensured that all affected individuals would be able to fly on their tickets. However, those who booked accommodation through Usit Campus would likely need to pay again once they arrived at their destination. The second-largest travel company specializing in the student and youth markets, Usit Campus travel’s collapse, did not drabble the largest, STA travel. The British Aviation Authority said that air travel had effectively rebounded after September 11 by December, although January was not a popular month for students to travel. The majority of travelers using Usit Campus tickets were gap-year students. The redundant employees of campus-based sales outlets of Campus Travel will have to request their January wages from the state. According to claims that Usit Campus sold tickets with knowledge of the group’s impending collapse, senior employees of the organization’s conduct will be investigated by the receiver.
